Johannesburg – Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has played down talk of a first Premier League title for the side in almost a quarter of a century and insisted that the destination of the championship will be decided over the last 10 games.

The Anfield giants won their most recent English title in 1990 but are top at Christmas ahead of their tricky trips to Manchester City on Thursday and Chelsea on Sunday.

According to Sport24, the midfielder said that he believes that Liverpool will be title contenders if they are in the title race with ten games to go, adding that he does not get carried away, change targets or raise expectations just because they had started the season strongly.

The report mentioned that Gerrard is currently out of action with a hamstring injury and will miss the trips to Manchester City and Chelsea but hopes to return for the match against Hull City on January 1.

Gerrard further said that they want a good run in the FA Cup and also want to finish in the top four given the talent they have got and their good start, adding that if they finish in the top four then it would help the club financially to bring players in and to end that long spell without it.
