Australian Open 2015: Novak Djokovic & Stan Wawrinka win
Djokovic, a four-time champion in Melbourne, beat Slovenia’s Aljaz Bedene 6-3 6-2 6-4, while Wawrinka saw off Turkey’s Marsel Ilhan 6-1 6-4 6-2.
Czech fourth seed Petra Kvitova opened with a 6-1 6-4 win over Dutch qualifier Richel Hogenkamp in the women’s draw.
World number one Serena Williams takes on Belgian Alison van Uytvanck in the night session.
Djokovic had suffered with an illness that restricted his practice time at Melbourne Park, but the world number one believes he is now up to speed.
“It has been a rough couple of weeks but it is behind me now,” the Serb said. “I’m proud of how I responded.”
Italy’s 16th seed Fabio Fognini was eliminated from the men’s draw after losing to unseeded Colombian Alejandro Gonzalez.
Another seed in the women’s draw fell, with 13th ranked Andrea Petkovic being beaten by Madison Brengle – the 24-year-old American recording her first win in the main draw of the Australian Open.
