Google’s secret `floating SF Bay data center` turns out to be luxury Google X showroom
Washington – Mystery surrounding Google’s rumoured oversized ‘floating data center’ in San Francisco Bay’s Treasure Island has been reportedly solved, as the floating barges are the search giant’s luxury showrooms for the company’s Google X top-secret lab.
The grand structure is about four stories high, and being made of cargo containers was speculated to be fit to be a data centre for being on a barge provides it an easy access to a source of cooling, as well as an inexpensive source of power, the sea.
According to Fox News, the barges are floating luxury showrooms for Google X Lab that works on various unconventional projects such as the Google Glass.
The barges will be invite-only and feature multiple product showcase floors as well as a party deck equipped with bars, lanais and other comforts so Google can fete its upscale customers.
C & C Marine and Repair, the builder of the 250 feet long, 72 feet wide, and 16 feet deep barge said that a vessel like BAL 0010 is capable of going ‘anywhere the owner can take it’, including into open water.
The report said that the showroom floors consist of standard 40-foot shipping containers that can be swapped out, so that Google can place them on trucks or rail cars and transport them anywhere for a local showcase.
One barge is currently docked at a port in San Francisco and the other is located off the coast of Maine, possibly en route to New York City, the report added.
