Telecom major Bharti Airtel on Thursday announced it has acquired 100 per cent stake in Wireless Business Services (WBSPL), a company founded by U.S. chipmaker Qualcomm. The company had acquired a 49 per cent stake in WBSPL in May 2012 for $165 million. At that price, the additional stake purchase would have cost Airtel an estimated $165 million, or Rs. 1,008.1 crore at Friday’s exchange rate. However, the company did not disclose the financial details of the deal. In a statement, Airtel said that it has “completed the acquisition of 100 per cent equity shares of Wireless Business Services Private Limited, which holds BWA Spectrum in the Indian telecom circles of Mumbai, Delhi, Haryana and Kerala”. Airtel acquired a majority stake in WBSPL in July by increasing its stake to 51 per cent from 49 per cent. WBSPL has spectrum that can be used for high-speed 4G services in New Delhi, Mumbai, Haryana and Kerala. Airtel has the similar spectrum in Punjab, Maharashtra, Kolkata and Karnataka. Airtel has already launched 4G services in Bangalore, Pune, Kolkata, Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula. Shares of Airtel were trading at Rs. 353.80, up by 1.46 per cent, in the afternoon session at BSE.

Former India cricketer Vinod Kambli, who suffered a heart attack on Friday while driving and was taken to hospital by a traffic police officer, is stable and being monitored in the intensive care unit of the Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai. "He is in the intensive care unit and we are monitoring his medical parameters," hospital director Narendra Trivedi told reporters. "He is stable and there is nothing to worry about," he added. Kambli's wife, Andrea, also issued a statement saying her husband was stable and recovering. "He experienced chest pain in the morning, after which he was taken to the hospital. He's stable and recovering well," she said. Kambli was driving from Chembur to Bandra when he suffered the attack. He was taken to the hospital by a lady traffic officer. Reportedly, Kambli, 42, underwent angioplasty on two of his blocked arteries at the same hospital in July 2012, but the surgery was kept well under wraps. Kambli, who played 17 Tests and 104 ODIs for India, is known for his flashy lifestyle and friendship with batting legend Sachin Tendulkar, which hasn't been on cordial terms of late. More recently, Kambli was in news due to his emotional outburst against Sachin, saying that the two are no longer friends. Kambli was hurt because Sachin didn't mention his name in his farewell speech and then didn't invite him to the farewell dinner he hosted after retirement.

Mumbai - Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan became "very sad" when he heard of the sudden demise of veteran actor Farooque Sheikh, whom he always appreciated for his honesty and zero pretence. "God! Farooque Sheikh passes away. A true gentleman, a wonderful colleague. A quiet honesty about him. Very very sad," the 71-year-old posted on microblogging website Twitter Saturday. The star of films like "Umrao Jaan" and "Chashme Buddoor", Farooque breathed his last following a heart attack while he was in Dubai late Friday night. He was 65. Born March 25, 1948, Sheikh started his Bollywood career in 1973 with the classic "Garam Hava" and later excelled in both parallel and mainstream cinema. Amitabh said he cannot believe "he has gone". "There was an absence of any kind of pretence in his demeanour, or towards his work," added Amitabh, who was himself in Dubai Thursday for a jewellery store launch. He returned to Mumbai Friday.
