Abut two months before the Delhi Police registered a case of murder against unknown persons in the death of Sunanda Pushkar, Shashi Tharoor had accused the police of “assaulting” and “intimidating” his domestic help, Narayan, into “confessing” that they both killed Pushkar.
In a letter to Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi, dated November 13, last year Tharoor said that he was “shocked” and “appalled” to learn that in the course of the 16-hour interrogation conducted by four Delhi Police officers on Friday (7/11/14) and again during the 14-hour interrogation on Saturday (8/11/14), his domestic helper Narayan Singh was repeatedly physically assaulted by one of the police officers. “The police officer used the traumatic physical assault to try and intimidate Narayan into ‘confessing’ that he and I had murdered my wife,” Tharoor wrote in his letter.
Confirming that he had received the letter, Bassi said the matter was looked into and the allegations were found to be baseless. “We had received the said letter and it was forwarded to the officers concerned in charge. We did not send any written reply to Mr Tharoor. Our officers looked into the allegations and found them baseless,” Bassi said.
Meanwhile, the police on Wednesday also announced a Special Investigative Team (SIT), that includes four senior police officers. The Additional CP is heading the team that comprises one inspector, a sub divisional ACP and the SHO of the police station concerned. The DCP South will supervise overall operations. “Since January 1, 55 persons including the hotel and the hospital staff has been questioned and a visit to the crime scene has also been made. A Delhi Police team had also visited a hospital in Thiruvananthapuram on December 2 last year where Ms Pushkar was admitted days before she was found dead,” a senior police officer said.
“The CCTV footage of the day from the morning of January 17 till the evening when Pushkar’s body was found is being re examined. Notes of who all entered and exited the room throughout the day are being made,” sources said.
