Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has suspended three officials of Kolkata’s Presidency jail where Saradha scam accused and former TMC MP Kunal Ghosh attempted suicide on Friday morning.
Prison SP, the doctor who was attending Ghosh as well as the officer on duty at the jail ward where the former PM attempted suicide have been suspended by the CM.
Ghosh, prime accused in the multi-crore scam, tried to end his life by consuming sleeping pills. He was rushed to SSKM hospital in the city by the jail authorities. In his suicide note, Ghosh claimed that he had taken 51 sleeping pills. His condition is reported to be stable. The CBI officials are likely to visit him later in the day.
Additional IG Correctional Services West Bengal KK Mukherjee said that the suspended TMC leader was not unconscious when he was rushed to the hospital and it was yet to ascertain if he had actually consumed those pills.
Ghosh had threatened to commit suicide in an open court claiming that the multi-crore scam was being influenced by people. He is named as a prime accused in the chargesheet filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the Saradha chit fund scam in West Bengal.
Political parties are claiming that there is more to the case than what meets the eye. “Committing suicide is a crime also. He has failed in his attempts. Now he should be chained. He is a prime witness. He must tell us who the real people are. There is a provision for plea bargain. He must apply for that so that we can give hima a lesser punishment,” former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Subramanian Swamy said.
While refusing to comment on Ghosh’s suicide attempt, Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi said, “We condemn the attempt to selectively distort and suppress big leaders in West Bengal. That is the real public interest story.”
