Landslide kills 19 workers in China
At least 19 people were killed and two others injured when a landslide struck a highway construction site in China’s Shaanxi Province.
Rescuers said the landslide engulfed the eight temporary dormitory rooms for construction workers who were sleeping inside.
The landslide broke down eight make-shift boarding houses and buried 21 construction workers yesterday, rescuers said.
Nine workers died on the spot, ten others succumbed to their injuries at a hospital and two others are undergoing treatment, state-run Xinhua News Agency reported.
The workers were working in a highway expansion project, connecting Huangling to Yan’an city in Shaanxi.
Local authorities said to have carried out geological survey in the region to prevent further geological disaster.
Yan’an city is part of the Loess Pateau which is known for its loose, sandy soil that frequently triggers landslides.
