Chitraang Murdia from Rajasthan topped the IIT-JEE advance examination, the results of which were declared on Thursday.
Murdia, who secured 97 percent in class 12, wants to study in the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Mumbai. “There is a slight confusion over what I opt for between two branches – computer science and electrical engineering. I want to pursue a career in research so that I can work for people,” Murdia said after the results were declared.
In Delhi, Srajan Garg topped the examination securing the 21st rank. Garg, 17, is a student of Lal Bahadur Shastri Senior Secondary School in RK Puram, south Delhi.
“I knew I will get a good rank. I feel elated. I have opted for computer science in IIT Mumbai,” Garg told IANS. “Making to the IITs is almost everybody’s dream and the fact that I have done it is yet to sink in completely. I owe my success to all my teachers as well as mentors at FIITJEE who not only guided me but also nurtured me to think beyond my weaknesses,” said Garg.
He said once he completes his studies, he wants to pursue a career in research.
However, only five girls made it to the top 100 qualifying students, The Indian Express reported. The Express report quoted IIT Kharagpur professor MK Panigrahi as saying girls formed only 11 percent of the total number of qualifying students.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the students who cleared the prestigious entrance test. “Congrats to all those who successfully cleared IIT-JEE. My best wishes with the youngsters as they enter a new phase of their lives,” the Prime Minister tweeted.
A total of 1,26,997 applicants had registered for the entrance examination out of which 27,151 candidates have cleared it.
The IIT-JEE advance exams are conducted to secure admission to the undergraduate programmes offered by the 16 IITs and the Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad in Jharkhand. The intake capacity of these institutes is 9,784.
The rank in the examination can also be used to secure admission to the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology, Rae Bareli; Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER), Pune; Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram and Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.
The students can fill in their choice of courses at these institutes from Friday onwards up to June 24.
The selection to other engineering colleges will be done on the basis of a cumulative normalised score of 40 percent of the marks a student secures in the XII Board marks and 60 percent of marks obtained in JEE-Main.
Architecture aspirants having cleared the IIT-JEE advance exam will be required to attempt the Architecture Aptitude Test 26 June.
