Delhi awaits a political Super Sunday

New Delhi – The outcome of the Delhi assembly elections – arguably the most exciting among the five states that went to polls in Nov-Dec – will be out Sunday, with t! he fate of 810 candidates for the 70-member assembly being decided.

The three major players – the Congress, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and debutant Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) – are on tenterhooks for the results might swing in anybody’s favour – if exit polls are not taken into consideration.

“The results are eagerly awaited as we are set to win the polls,” a senior BJP leader said here Saturday.

The counting for the largest turnout in Delhi – over 66 percent – will begin at 8 a.m.

A total 11,993 Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) have been kept under high security in 14 counting centres across the city.

What makes the contest exciting is the three-way battle with the advent of AAP that has created ripples on the political landscape of Delhi, hitherto the fiefdom of the Congress and the BJP.

If there is something common in the results of various exit polls, it is that the Sheila Dikshit-led ruling Congress is headed for a debacl! e.

But, a close aide of Dikshit told IANS: “It is too early to s! ee say what is in store for us. We are confident of forming the government in Delhi.”

For the BJP and the AAP, mixed results are in store with some exit polls putting the former into driver’s seat and predicting a phenomenal success for AAP which, the polls say, can garner double digits.

The success of AAP can pave way for a hung assembly too.

The exits poll results have proved to be a shot in the arm for AAP so much so the party workers are already in celebratory mood.

An AAP member said, “We are gearing up for victory and preparing for celebrations at the party office in New Delhi.”

Meanwhile, Jangpura constituency voters in Delhi were casting their votes again Saturday, as a polling booth presiding officer forgot to clear the EVM after the mock poll held before Dec 4.
