Amethi : Congress workers beat up Aam Admi Party (AAP) members
Amethi – Aam Admi Party (AAP) members were beaten up by Congress party workers on Monday night in Amethi – the Lok Sabha constituency of Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi.
AAP has already announced that it will field a candidate against Gandhi in Amethi in upcoming Lok Sabha election.
Both AAP and Congress workers had gathered for a public debate organised at the Ramlila Maidan on Monday evening on the invitation of a TV channel.
AAP leaders and workers arrived at the spot sporting the party cap and were asked by Congress leaders to remove the caps before taking the dais.
But, the AAP leaders insisted that they would sport the cap which le
d to a heated exchange between the supporters of both the parties and soon the spot turned into a battleground.
The AAP members were outnumbered and chased from the spot. Some of the AAP workers were beaten up while they were fleeing from the ground.
AAP spokesperson Harikesh Srivastava said his members went to the Ramlila ground on the invitation of TV channel.
“The Congress leaders beat us up for no of fault of ours. We had told the organisers that AAP workers would sport the cap. The Congress workers tried to create fear among the AAP workers with muscle power,” said Srivastava.
The president of district Congress Committee Yogendra Mishra and former president Prem Narain Tiwari said none of the AAP workers belonged to Amethi.
They were brought from Lucknow and other districts to participate in the programme, they said.
Station House Officer (SHO) Amethi, OP Singh said that he has not received any complaint from AAP leaders.
