Mumbai – With 100 years of Indian cinema, fashion in films also has seen a drastic makeover. Designers feel that making clothes for movies is not a cakewalk.

Renowned designers like Neeta Lulla, Niharika Khan and Gavin Miguel shared their opinion on the changing trends of fashion in the industry during a workshop here.

The workshop, organised by the WIFT India (Women In Films & Television), was an initiative to let the students know how and what has changed in the past 100 years in fashion in India.

“While making a costume for a film, it’s very important to understand the script, the character and the director’s mind and then walk on a thin line to create a costume that defines the character,” said National Award winning designer Lulla while answering the question “Does a costume define a character?”

Miguel, who has styled for the likes of Priyanka Chopra, Hrithik Roshan, Katrina Kaif, Shah Rukh Khan and many others, feels that “as a designer it’s always about putting your hard work forward and not just researching on your computer to create something”.

While period films are easy to work on, contemporary cinema requires a lot of dedication, feels Niharika Khan, who won National Award for designing costumes for the film “The Dirty picture”.

“Period movies are easy to work on as one has references of time and space. You just have to put everything together. But contemporary movies are difficult to work on as you are always expected to create something new,” she said.

The evening was moderated by model-actress Sarah-Jane Dias, who also took part in the conversation and shared her views on fashion and trends.

“Costumes for characters are as important as a script or a director as you want your character to look what you have imagined them to look like,” she said.

The event was sponsored by clothingbrand Soch and jewellery brand PNG.
