Israel Attacks Iran, Explosions Echo Near Tehran
In a major escalation, Israel launched targeted strikes on “military targets” in Iran, characterizing them as retaliation for Iran’s prolonged support of anti-Israel offensives since October 7. While precise details on the damage remain limited, Israeli sources clarify that energy infrastructure was not targeted. Tehran residents reported hearing distant explosions, with local media confirming heavy Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps activity in the capital.
Several explosions have been reported in and around Tehran. Air defence systems activated in the capital as Iranian media report none of the military sites belonging to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) have been hit.
According to U.S. officials, Washington was informed of Israel’s plans but did not participate. The strikes follow a period of heightened hostilities, including Iran’s earlier ballistic missile assault on Israel and continuing clashes involving Iran-backed forces in Lebanon and Gaza. In Gaza, Israeli drones recently targeted civilians waiting for humanitarian aid, adding to an already severe death toll that has exceeded 42,800.
