Diseases and Ailments

Herpes

Description

A highly contagious infection, herpes is a viral infection caused by the herpes simplex virus. There are two types of herpes - oral herpes that causes cold sores or fever blisters around the mouth. The other, genital herpes, causes sores below the waist. The latter is sexually transmitted and causes pain and blisters in the genital area. Herpes can be transferred by kissing, sharing eating utensils or having intimate contact. Stress, fatigue, pregnancy, hormonal imbalance and cosmetic surgery are also some of the causes of herpes. Painful sores, flu-like symptoms, fever, and swollen glands are some of the symptoms of herpes. They might be mild, moderate or even severe. However, herpes can be treated at home naturally.

Symptoms

  • Small, red bumps and blisters (vesicles)
  • Open sores (ulcers)
  • Excessive pain
  • Itching

Causes

Herpes is generally caused by two types of herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections - HSV type 1 and HSV type 2. While the former causes cold sores or fever blisters around the mouth, an after effect of oral sex, the latter spreads through sexual contact and skin-to-skin contact. HSV type 2 virus causes blisters or groups of small ulcers (open sores) on and around the genitals, in both men and women. Though a highly contagious disease, the infection cannot spread through contact with toilets, towels or other objects used by an infected person, as the virus dies quickly, once out of the body.
