Karnataka is considered peaceful, progressive and prosperous from a social, economic, cultural perspective . Bangalore city has the advantage of a rich heritage , cosmopolitan culture and salubrious climate and is considered a multi-linguistic place. Students from the north and north-eastern states view Karnataka, particularly Bangalore, as full of opportunities for every person to dream to make a career and realise it. The fact that more than 65% of Bangalore’s population consists of migrants from other states is an indication of its cultural diversity.

Karnataka is considered a prominent knowledge state in India. The state boasts of national-level institutions in almost every discipline such as health, management, science and technology, law, social science, education, linguistics as well as an IIM, IISc, IIIT, TIFR, National Law School, NIMHANS, ISEC, RIE Mysore, Regional Institute of English etc.
The creation of intellectual manpower rests with one central university, 24 public universities, 12 deemed universities, 6 private universities, 207 engineering colleges, 61 medical dolleges, 48 dental colleges, 280 management institutions , and more than 60 international schools.
Bangalore is credited with more than 125 R&D centres in the field of core engineering, information technology, basic and applied sciences, aerospace etc. Major Indian and foreign IT and manufacturing companies have their R&D centres here. Bangalore is also known as a health tourism centre with stateof-art hospitals of international repute catering to patients from across the nation and from abroad as well. With reference to higher and professional education, apart from Bangalore , Belgaum, Hubli-Dharwar , Mangalore and Mysore are other destinations. They offer cost-effective education. More than 10,000 students representing around 60 countries study in Karnataka which accounts for one-third of foreign students in India.

Bangalore’s metamorphosis

Bangalore was known till the ’70s as the destination of public sector industries. In the ’80s and ’90s, it donned the role of producer of quality engineering, medical and management graduates. In the ’90s, with economic liberalization and development of information technology and IT-enabled services in India, Bangalore took centrestage and emerged as the IT destination of India.
