On October 23, 2024, a deadly terrorist attack targeted the Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) in Ankara. The facility, crucial to Turkey’s defense industry, was struck by an explosion and gunfire. Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya confirmed several casualties, including fatalities, though exact numbers were undisclosed. TAI plays a vital role in producing military aircraft, including F-16s and Turkey’s indigenous fighter jet projects. Initial reports suggest a possible suicide bombing, with investigations underway to identify those responsible. This marks a significant blow to Turkey’s defense infrastructure.

“A terrorist attack was carried out against the Turkish Aerospace Industries… Unfortunately, we have martyrs and injured people,” Ali Yerlikaya wrote on X, using a term often used for the deaths of soldiers or police.

Initial images shown by Turkey’s private NTV television channel showed a large cloud of smoke in front of the site’s entrance some 40 kilometres outside the capital, saying the blast took place at around 4 pm (1300 GMT).

Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAS) is an engine manufacturer for the Turkish defense industry. A series of explosions and gunshots were heard during live footage published by the IHA news agency. Police and other emergency teams were dispatched to the headquarters.

Located in the Kahramankazan district, about 40 kilometers (25 miles) north of Ankara’s city center, TUSAS vast complex covers an area of 4 million square meters. The defense giant is the manufacturer of Turkey’s first locally produced fifth-generation fighter jet, KAAN, as well as the Hurjet, a trainer and light attack aircraft, and the Hurkuş, a basic trainer and close air support aircraft.

An Ankara prosecutor launched an investigation into the attack, Turkey’s official Anadolu News Agency reported.
