Cricket is a contentious sport. Some people love it and enjoy watching it. Others have a hard
time understanding the rules. During the World Cup, though, enthusiasts of this sport get
whipped into a frenzy. They can’t wait to check out today’s IPL match, and they might also
spend time talking about the most compelling moments from past World Cups.
Let’s talk about a few of those right now. Anyone who loves this sport is sure to remember
some of these.

Steve Waugh and Australia in ‘99

At Headingley in ‘99, Australia knew that they needed to knock off powerhouse South Africa to
get to the Super Six stage. The Proteas mounted a furious effort and somehow staved off
elimination. They opted to bat first and made 271-7.
Steve Waugh was the hero of the day. He helped his side to a three-wicket win, cementing his
place as a countrywide legend in Australia to this day.

Australia Beats South Africa in ‘99

Steve Waugh was not the only hero during Australia’s unlikely road to victory in the ‘99 World
Cup. Lance Klusener also had his moment in the sun during that year’s incredible event.
Klusener had several memorable plays that eventually catapulted the Aussies past South Africa
and to the tournament finals. There, they demolished Pakistan and walked away as world
champions. The Aussies still talk about it frequently.

Andy Flower and Henry Olanga in 2003

Teammates Andy Flower and Henry Olanga put Zimbabwe on the map at the World Cup in
2003. Some teams did not want to play in Zimbabwe that year. In fact, England spoke about
security concerns and demurred.

Olanga and Flower put on black armbands that they stated were to “mourn the death of
democracy.” They did this because of the internal strife that was taking place in their country at
that time.

By doing this, the two teammates essentially ended their international careers. Zimbabwe’s
government stated that they were committing treason, and Olanga played only one more time in
the tournament before he had to flee to escape charges.

Flower kept playing because his other teammates said they would strike if he was dropped.
This moment of bravery has been remembered ever since.

South Africa in the Rain in 2003

South Africa had to deal with torrential downpours at the World Cup in 2003. That was ironic,
considering they also had to overcome bad weather back in 1992.
Though the team played valiantly, their victory was not to be. Their game and hopes were
washed away, perhaps proof that some sports deity didn’t want them to hoist the trophy that
year.

Herschelle Gibbs in 2007

Herschelle Gibbs became the first and only player to hit an unheard-of six sixes in an
international competition in 2007. In Basseterre, in the group game, he went on an incredible
run, contributing 72 from only 40 balls. That is a performance that has not been equaled since.
It’s anyone’s guess what the next most thrilling World Cup moment will be.
