Tamil Nadu rain | SCHOOLS SHUT IN 9 DISTRICTS FOR TWO DAYS

As heavy rain continued to batter parts of Tamil Nadu, Director General of Police (DGP) C Sylendra Babu late on Tuesday night sent out a video message urging people to be indoors.

Sylendra Babu in the video listed the dos and don’ts and appealed to people not to let their children go out to unsafe places. He asked people to be cautious of lightning and thundershowers. He also asked them to refrain from using TV when there is a thunderstorm to avoid any untoward incident.

He has asked people to take all precautions before the heavy rainfall that has been forecast for Wednesday and Thursday (November 10 and 11). Schools and colleges in nine districts of Tamil Nadu will remain shut on these two days. Owing to a heavy-rain forecast, a holiday has been declared in Chennai, Kancheepuram, Thiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur and Mayiladuthurai.

The heavy-rainfall forecast was put out owing to a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal that is very likely to concentrate into a depression, the meteorological department said.

As per inputs received till Tuesday evening, at least five lives have been lost due to the incessant showers.

Fishermen have been advised not to go towards south Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu coast and the adjacent Sri Lanka coast till November 11.

The IMD has said the rain can lead to flooding of roads, inundation and waterlogging in low-lying areas; low visibility; disruption of traffic; damage to vulnerable structures; localised landslides/mudslides; and damage to crops.

The Chennai Meteorological Centre has also forecast thunderstorms with heavy rain at isolated places in the Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Erode, Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri and Tiruvannamalai districts.

The Madras High Court on Tuesday pulled up the Greater Chennai Corporation for failing to take adequate measures to prevent flooding in the city during rain.
