The United States produced an impressive performance as they thrashed Japan 5-2 in a pulsating thriller to lift the Women’s World Cup for the third time, with the match featuring an astounding 13-minute hat-trick by midfielder Carli Lloyd.

Lloyd gave the Americans an early 2-0 lead within five minutes in a stunning start to the match.

Subsequently, Lauren Holiday consolidated the advantage by adding a third before Lloyd completed her hat-trick to give the USA an unassailable 4-0 lead.

Although the 2011 winners tried to retaliate as Yuki Ogimi strike and a Julie Johnston own goal helped them reduce goal deficit, the USA mounted further pressure when Tobin Heath made it 5-2, the BBC reported.
The match also finished as the highest scoring final in the tournament’s history.
