If the two days since Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal returned to Delhi have been dominated by negotiations and meetings in the deeply divided AAP, they have also been replete with political posturing.
It emerged that senior leader Prashant Bhushan had written a note to Kejriwal, which sources said, indicated that both Bhushan and Yadav were willing to forgo party posts if matters raised by the duo — such as elections in other states, volunteer involvement and others — were introduced by the party. On Wednesday morning, however, both leaders, who were removed from the Political Affairs Committee in an acrimonious National Executive meeting on March 4, spoke in different voices. Bhushan confirmed the existence of the letter, but said he had not resigned. Yadav denied the existence of any such letter and told ANI, “Neither I nor Prashantji has given the letter which is doing the rounds in the media today.”
Sources in the Kejriwal camp insisted that a communication existed, the details of which were on the lines of the points made by the duo in a letter and a note to the National Executive on March 4.
“It was on the basis of this letter that a discussion took place between Sanjay Singh, Ashish Khetan and Ashutosh from Kejriwal’s side and Ajit Jha and Anand Kumar from the Yadav and Bhushan camp on Tuesday afternoon at Khetan’s residence. The letter conveys that certain issues such as volunteer participation and the party’s growth nationally were more important than posts and that they were open to stepping down if these matters were looked at,” a senior leader said.
These issues were discussed by the Political Affairs Committee, and, in what is a clear shift from a time when Kejriwal called ambitions of contesting in other states a sign of “ahankar”, leaders announced that the AAP would consider polls in states other than Delhi.
A meeting of members from both camps took place on Wednesday evening. Sources said, “nitty gritties” of what was announced after the PAC meeting was discussed. “These included timeframes as well as an appropriate role for Yadav.” They also indicated that an attempt will be made to meet both Yadav and Bhushan on Thursday.
