Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday offered India’s cooperation to the leaders and representatives of Pacific Island nations on several issues including space, telemedicine and training of diplomats.

“PM @narendramodi announces Special Adaptation Fund for Pacific Islands & offers use of space technology applications. India to develop Pan Pacific Islands Project for telemedicine and tele-education. India to enhance deputation of experts to Pacific islands & training of diplomats,” Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) official spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin tPrime Minister Modi stated to the leaders present at the forum that this gathering though is a first of its kind, but assured that it won’t be the last which is a beginning of building a connection.

Earlier, Fiji gave a red carpet welcome to Prime Minister Modi. He was received by Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama at Nausori International Airport.

The Indian Prime Minister was given a ceremonial guard of honour at the airport after which he attended the traditional welcome ceremony at the Albert Park.

Following the ceremonial reception, Prime Minister Modi said that, “Fiji could serve as a hub for stronger Indian engagement with Pacific Islands.”

“I see this visit as an opportunity to renew an old relationship and lay the foundation for a strong partnership in the future,” he added. Prime Minister Modi also addressed the Fijian Parliament, a first by a foreign leader, during which he said that India was prepared to work with Fiji to build a ‘Digital Fiji’.weeted.
