Aamir Khan bats for clean India, better waste management

Bollywood actor and host of reality show Satyamev Jayate Aamir Khan, who was in town on Sunday for live screening of ‘Mumkin Hai’ programme, addressed a press conference thereafter. Responding to a question, he said “Swachh Bharat is definitely possible by 2019 as envisioned by the PM, but not easy”.

He referred to an episode of the show on solid and liquid resource management (SLRM) and said that if all municipalities and citizens adopted this method of segregating waste, it would be a ‘win-win situation for all’.

During the press conference, the actor dodged a direct question on the issue of ‘love jihad’ by saying “I need to do more research before I comment.” However, he later compared love jihad to honour killings. “In both cases, we don’t respect the right of an individual to choose a partner.”

I am a Muslim and both my former wife Reena and current spouse Kiran are Hindus. Also my sister is married to a Hindu. The children in our family learn about all religions. I don’t believe in forceful conversions as everyone has the right to religion and right to life. For me, humanity is the supreme religion”.

On being asked as to whether he would make an episode to mark the 30{+t}{+h} anniversary of Bhopal Gas Tragedy, he said, “We don’t reveal topics beforehand but I would definitely discuss this with my team and think about how we can work on this theme”.

The actor claimed that Gwalior district administration collector, health department of Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan were evidently moved by some episodes of Satyamev Jayate.

Gwalior collector made 95 per cent of the city disabled friendly while the chief minister and health department introduced the generic-medicines scheme in the state, he said.

“The political and administrative class is after all human and we have received a dynamic response from them after the telecast of some of our episodes,” he said.

The actor also claimed that Maharashtra, where the sex ratio was 819 females per 1,000 males and was severely lagging behind the national average of 914 has in fact improved the ratio to 940 after his show on poor sex ratio was aired.
