A new study has revealed that humor and laughter can help in fighting against memory loss as they lessen the damage caused on the learning ability of a person by stress hormone cortisol.

Researchers at Loma Linda University found that cortisol concentrations came down significantly among two groups who were shown a funny video.

The participants in both groups also showed greater improvement in all areas of the memory assessment when compared to controls.

Lead researcher Gurinder Singh Bains stressed that he findings of the study can offer potential clinical and rehabilitative benefits that can be applied in the wellness programmes aimed at the elderly. The findings can be used to develop the memory of elderly person.

The researchers said that stress is not good for memory and humor reduces detrimental stress hormones like cortisol that decrease memory hippocampal neurons, lowers the blood pressure, and increases blood flow and mood state.

The study revealed that laughter increases the release of endorphins and dopamine in the brain, which leads to positive neurochemical changes and it allows the immune system to work better.
