Producer-Director Ramesh Sippy moves Supreme Court : “Sholay 3D”

Producer-Director Ramesh Sippy moved the Supreme Court Thursday to get a stay on the release of the 3D version of the 1975 blockbuster Sholay by his nephews over a copyright dispute.

The matter was mentioned before a Bench led by Chief Justice P Sathasivam, who has fixed the matter for hearing Friday. The counsel for Ramesh Sippy sought urgent hearing, pointing out that the movie was slated to be released Friday.

Ramesh Sippy has moved the apex court against the Bombay High Court order refusing to stay the release of the film.

In the High Court, Ramesh Sippy had asserted his ownership on the copyright of the movie and said that his nephews Shaan and Shasha, and others were guilty of infringement of his copyright by trying to make a 3D version of Sholay.

He had challenged a gift deed of September 2000, where Sippy Films gifted all rights in Sholay to Shaan and Sascha’s company, which in turn gave exclusive 3D and 2D theatrical rights of the film to producer Jayantilal Gada and his company.
