Devyani Khobragade is the only victim: MEA
Ministry of External Affairs on Thursday said that there is only one victim in the Devyani Khobragade case and that is Ms. Khobragade, a serving Indian diplomat on mission in the US.
The Ministry added that there were “no courtesies” in the treatment that was meted out to the diplomat, under the normal definition of that word in the English language.
To the response to U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara’s remarks, the ministry asserted “It needs to be asked what right a foreign govt has to “evacuate” Indian citizens from India while cases are pending against them in Indian legal system.”
The Ministry of External Affairs further added that the statement underlines the compulsion that is felt by the Manhattan U.S. Attorney’s office “to make sure that victims, witnesses and their families are safe and secure while cases are pending”.
The MEA also said that this (Bharara’s) statement is one more attempt at a post facto rationalisation for an action that should never have taken place in the first instance.
