Dementia sufferers set to treble by 2050

London – A new analysis has revealed that number of people afflicted with dementia worldwide would treble by 2050.

According to Alzheimer’s Disease International, 44 million people suffer from the disease, but that figure would increase to 135 million by 2050, the BBC reported.

Alzheimer’s Disease International expects increasing life expectancies to increase Dementia cases in poor and middle-income countries, particularly in South East Asia and Africa.

There are about 38 percent Dementia cases in rich countries, however, by 2050, 71 percent of patients would be in poor and middle-income countries.

Marc Wortmann, the executive director at Alzheimer Disease International, said that this is a global epidemic which will only get worse, asserting that if they look into the future the numbers of elderly people is going to rise dramatically.
