Tehelka Managing Editor Shoma Chaudhury on Wednesday rejected the charge of her being involved in “slander, intimidation or character assassination” of the victim of the alleged sexual assault by the magazine’s Editor Tarun Tejpal and termed it a “malicious campaign”.

“I strongly reject the allegations in the media that I am involved in any manner with any slander, intimidation or character assassination of the complainant journalist. This is a malicious campaign that has no basis in truth,” Ms. Chaudhury said on Wednesday in a statement.

The Tehelka journalist, who had accused Mr. Tejpal of sexually assaulting her, had in her resignation letter accused him and Ms. Chaudhury of a “cover-up” and resorting to “tactics of intimidation, character assassination and slander”.

“At a time when I find myself victim to such a crime, I am shattered to find the Editor-in-Chief of Tehelka, and you — in your capacity as Managing Editor — resorting to precisely these tactics of intimidation, character assassination and slander,” the journalist had said.

“Given the sequence of events since November 7, it is not just Mr Tejpal who has failed me as an employer — but Tehelka that has failed women, employees, journalists and feminists collectively. Please consider my resignation effective immediately,” she had said.

The woman had said she was deeply traumatised by the lack of support offered by the organisation and “in such circumstances it is untenable for me to continue to work for this organisation.”

On Tuesday, the victim’s mother had filed a complaint with the Delhi police against an immediate family member of the Tehelka Editor alleging “intimidation” over the case.

Delhi police sources said the mother had come to Pandav Nagar police station in east Delhi and filed a complaint against the member of Mr. Tejpal’s family.

On Saturday, the victim had issued a statement saying she and her family were being subjected to pressure and intimidation at an “intensely traumatic” time to “protect” Mr. Tejpal.

Police said they have forwarded the complaint to its legal department to decide how it should be handled.

New Delhi - Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Arun Jaitley on Wednesday said that Vasundhara Raje and Narendra Modi are a winning combination for the Rajasthan state assembly elections to be held on December 1. “BJP has a winning combination in poll bound Rajasthan with the leadership of Vasundharaji and Modiji,” Jaitley told media here. The upcoming election in Rajasthan is being seen as a litmus test for both the BJP and the Congress ahead of the 2014 general elections. Rajasthan is currently governed by a Congress Government. The counting of votes will take place on December 8. Modi had earlier said the development in Rajasthan has come to a standstill under the Ashok Gehlot-led regime. Addressing a rally here recently, Modi criticised the Gehlot Government for ignoring the tourism sector of the state, which he said is a huge revenue generator. "Due to the poor policies of the Gehlot Government, the number of tourists visiting the state is decreasing day by day. It is an issue of serious concern," he added. Reminding people about the steep rise in prices of basic commodities, Modi accused Congress leaders of acquiring a mastery over making big promises and not fulfilling them. "People must reply to the Congress by not voting for them in the coming assembly election," he added. Targetting the Congress-led UPA Government at the Centre, Modi said all politicians debating on development are now forced to give the example of Gujarat. "Wherever there is an election, the discussion always veers around to the Gujarat example," he said.
