Security tightened in parts of Srinagar for Muharram
Curfew-like restrictions were imposed in parts of Srinagar city on Friday, to prevent Shia mourners from taking out Muharram processions following apprehensions of law and order problems.
“Restrictions have been imposed in parts of six police station areas of the city as a precautionary measure,” a government spokesman said.
The curfew has been imposed in Maisuma, MR Gunj, Nowhatta, Khanyar, Safakadal and Zadibal police station areas, the spokesman said.
Before the onset of militancy in the state, Shia community in the city used to take out processions from Abi Guzar in Kothibagh and Guru Bazaar in Kralkhud police station areas which culminated at Dalgate in Ram Munshi Bagh area to mark the tenth day of Muharram.
However, these processions were banned in 1990 as authorities feared that militants could attack people.
The spokesman said there were no reports of any untoward incident from any part of the city.
